THE FULL ROUTE
Every shelter, every kilometre marker, both summit-day trail options — the complete 8.72km route from Timpohon Gate to Low's Peak, mapped out stop by stop.
DAY 1
The climb begins with a short descent to Carson's Falls before the real ascent starts. Seven rest shelters (locally called "Pondok") mark the way up through four distinct vegetation zones — from lowland rainforest to mossy cloud forest to stunted subalpine growth.
| Shelter | Elevation | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Timpohon Gate (start) | 1,866m | Registration checkpoint, trail begins with descent to Carson's Falls |
| Kandis Shelter | 1,981m | First shelter — clear-day views of the KK–Park road |
| Ubah Shelter | 2,032m | Second shelter |
| Lowii Shelter | 2,267m | Mossy forest of bamboo and tree ferns |
| Mempening Shelter | 2,516m | Wild begonias growing nearby |
| Layang-Layang Shelter | 2,702m | 4km mark — most climbers stop here for packed lunch |
| Villosa Shelter | 2,948m | Open rocky patch, view back down at the mountain |
| Paka Shelter | 3,072m | Final shelter before Panalaban, named after nearby Paka Cave |
| Panalaban / Laban Rata | 3,272m | Overnight stop — accommodation and dinner |
Day 1 covers roughly 6km and takes 4–6 hours depending on pace and fitness.
DAY 2
After the 2015 Sabah earthquake damaged the original summit trail, Sabah Parks built two replacement routes above Panalaban: the Ranau Trail and the Kota Belud Trail. Both start from Panalaban and meet again at Sayat-Sayat Checkpoint (3,668m) — the last checkpoint and last toilet stop before the summit push.
2.97km, opened 1 December 2015. The gentler of the two replacement routes — most climbers, especially first-timers, are assigned here by default.
2.8km, opened 9 December 2016, slightly shorter but noticeably tougher — some sections exceed 60° incline, requiring real upper and lower body strength. Selected at registration and can't be upgraded to later.
From Sayat-Sayat, the trail crosses bare granite slabs with kilometre markers all the way to the summit — the final stretch (past km 8.5) is the steepest and hardest part of the entire climb, using fixed ropes.
A separate Mesilau Trail once offered an alternative, more scenic starting point 2km longer than Timpohon Gate. It has been closed indefinitely since suffering damage in the 2015 Sabah earthquake — all climbers now start exclusively from Timpohon Gate.
HEADING BACK DOWN
After summiting, most climbers descend to Panalaban in around 2 hours, check out, then continue all the way down to Timpohon Gate — a further 4–6 hours. Most climbers arrive back at Timpohon Gate between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Descending is genuinely tough on the knees given the steep steps; trekking poles help. There's an overtime guide fee of RM15/hour if you arrive back after the 4:00pm cutoff.
| Timpohon Gate ↔ Laban Rata Resthouse | RM14/kg |

| Timpohon Gate ↔ Summit | RM20/kg |
QUICK ANSWERS
No — it's been closed indefinitely since the 2015 Sabah earthquake. All climbers now start from Timpohon Gate.
Ranau Trail is the gentler, more commonly assigned option. Kota Belud Trail is slightly shorter but has sections steeper than 60°, requiring genuine upper and lower body strength — you choose at registration and can't switch to the harder trail later, but can switch away from it if assigned.
Seven rest shelters between Timpohon Gate and Panalaban on Day 1 — Kandis, Ubah, Lowii, Mempening, Layang-Layang, Villosa, and Paka.
Roughly 4–6 hours for Day 1's ascent to Panalaban, 2–4 hours for the Day 2 summit push, and 4–6 hours for the full descent back to Timpohon Gate.
