Sore legs after the climb? Poring Hot Springs and the Kundasang highlands are both close by and make a natural add-on to your trip.
The classic post-climb reward — sulphur hot spring baths, originally developed by the Japanese during WWII, piped into both open-air and private tubs. Poring sits at a much lower elevation (around 400m) than Kinabalu Park HQ, so it's noticeably warmer and a good place to unwind sore muscles.
Beyond the baths, Poring includes a butterfly farm, orchid conservation centre, Rafflesia garden, and Langanan Waterfall (120m). Entry fee is roughly RM15 for foreign visitors, and if you already paid Kinabalu Park's conservation fee, the same ticket can often be used at Poring.
Poring's famous treetop canopy walkway has been closed since July 2025 for maintenance, with no confirmed reopening date as of writing. Confirm current status before planning around it.
Getting there: roughly 40 minutes to 1 hour by road from Kinabalu Park HQ, or about 2.5–3 hours directly from Kota Kinabalu city. Most climbers visit either the day after descending (if timing allows before the 3:00pm entry cutoff) or as part of a separate excursion.
The highland town right at Kinabalu Park's doorstep, known for its cool climate, rolling vegetable farms, and the best unobstructed views of Mount KK itself — many climbers photograph the mountain from Kundasang before or after their climb. Key stops include Desa Dairy Farm (New Zealand-style dairy farm with mountain backdrop views), the Kundasang War Memorial (honouring WWII Sandakan Death March victims), and numerous fresh produce markets.
A higher-elevation nature resort (1,925m) on the other side of the mountain, historically the starting point of the now-closed Mesilau climbing trail. It's still worth visiting for its cooler climate, botanical trails, and views — the Loop Trail day-hike option lets visitors walk partway up toward Layang-Layang without a full climbing permit, guided by a licensed mountain guide.
