How to Get to Mount KK from the Airport

Flying in from overseas? Here's the full journey from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) to Kinabalu Park, step by step.

TOTAL JOURNEY ~2–2.5 HRS

THE FULL JOURNEY

Airport to Kinabalu Park, leg by leg

LEG 1

Land at BKI

Kota Kinabalu International Airport is the main gateway to Sabah, roughly 8km from the city centre. It has two terminals — Terminal 1 for full-service airlines, Terminal 2 for budget carriers — connected by a free shuttle every 20 minutes.

LEG 2

Airport → City centre

Around 20 minutes by taxi (fixed coupon fare, buy at the Level 1 counter) or Grab (Malaysia's main ride-hailing app — download it before you land). An airport bus service has historically run this route too, but confirm current availability before relying on it.

LEG 3

City → Kinabalu Park

Roughly 90km / 1.5–2 hours by road. Most climbers skip this logistics puzzle entirely — nearly all climb packages include a return private transfer directly from your KK hotel to Kinabalu Park HQ as part of the price.

CHOOSE YOUR OPTION

Getting from KK city to the park

MethodTimeApprox. costNotes
Operator private transfer1.5–2 hrsIncluded in packageSimplest — booked with your climb package
Private car / Grab1h 15m~RM150–250Fastest, most flexible, no fixed schedule
Public minibus~3h 40m~RM33 (~USD8)Departs hourly from KK Bas Bandaran, budget option, longer route
Recommended for first-timers

Unless you're confident navigating local transport on a tight schedule, book the operator-arranged transfer through your climbing package. It removes the biggest logistics risk — missing your registration window at Kinabalu Park HQ, run by Sabah Parks, before the climb.

PLANNING YOUR ITINERARY

How to time your arrival

Since registration and the climb itself typically start early morning, most climbers fly into Kota Kinabalu the day before their climb date and either stay in KK city overnight or head straight to accommodation near Kinabalu Park. If you're on a 3D2N package, this extra night is often already built in — see our Packages & Prices page for details.

QUICK ANSWERS

Getting there FAQ

Which airport do I fly into for Mount KK?

Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI), served by major airlines including Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and connections from regional hubs like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Is transport to Kinabalu Park included in climb packages?

Yes — nearly all standard climb packages include return private transfers between Kota Kinabalu and Kinabalu Park HQ.

Do I need to stay overnight in KK city first?

Not strictly, but it's common — especially if your flight lands later in the day, since the journey to the park plus registration takes time. A 3D2N package builds in extra time to acclimatise.

Can I rent a car and drive myself?

Yes, self-driving is an option and roads are generally in good condition, but most climbers use the included package transfer since it removes timing risk before registration.
