ADD-ON ADVENTURE
The highest Via Ferrata in the world, and the only one in Asia — cables, rungs, and bridges fixed to the granite above Laban Rata. Here's how Walk the Torq and Low's Peak Circuit compare.
WHAT IT IS
"Via ferrata" means "iron path" — a protected climbing route using rungs, cables, and bridges drilled directly into the rock face. Mount KK's Via Ferrata is both the highest in the world and the only one in Asia, taking climbers along a different side of the mountain after they've already reached Low's Peak summit.
No rock climbing or mountaineering experience is required — a head for heights, reasonable stamina, and a sense of adventure matter more than technical skill. All climbers attend a mandatory orientation with a certified Mountain Torq trainer before starting, and are harnessed and clipped in throughout the route.
CHOOSE YOUR ROUTE
Age, weight and height limits are set by Mountain Torq, the Via Ferrata operator, and enforced strictly for safety — exceptions are not made.
HOW IT WORKS
Hotel pickup in Kota Kinabalu, transfer to Kinabalu Park HQ, registration, then trek from Timpohon Gate to Pendant Hut (3,289m) — around 4–5 hours.
Arrive at Pendant Hut. Mandatory Via Ferrata orientation and safety briefing with your Mountain Torq trainer (3:00–4:00pm).
Buffet dinner at Laban Rata, then early night — lights out around 8pm ahead of the pre-dawn start.
Wake around 1:30–2:00am for a light supper, then continue the ascent to Low's Peak summit (4,095m) for sunrise.
Meet your Via Ferrata trainer and complete Walk the Torq or Low's Peak Circuit, then return to Pendant Hut for a late breakfast.
Check out, descend to Timpohon Gate, collect your certificate of achievement at HQ, then transfer back to Kota Kinabalu.
Climbers who miss the mandatory briefing or return cutoff time cannot proceed with the Via Ferrata activity — no reimbursement is given, but you can still reach Low's Peak summit without it. Activities may also be cancelled for bad weather with no reimbursement, for safety reasons.
