THE HEADLINE NUMBER
Mount KK's summit, Low's Peak, stands 4,095 metres (13,435 feet) above sea level. That makes it the highest point in Malaysia and the Malay Archipelago, the third-highest island peak on Earth, and the 20th most prominent mountain in the world — its topographic prominence is also 4,095m, since it rises in near-total isolation from any higher connected terrain.

GEOLOGY
Mount KK isn't a volcano — it's a granite pluton, a mass of molten rock that cooled and hardened deep underground roughly 7 to 10 million years ago, then was thrust upward through the older Crocker Range sedimentary rock starting about 1 million years ago. That uplift never stopped: the mountain is still rising by approximately 5mm a year, making it one of the youngest exposed granite formations anywhere on the planet.
In 2022, the International Union of Geological Sciences included Mount KK's granite in its list of the world's top 100 geological heritage sites, citing its youth and the tropical glacial landscape carved into its summit.
Molten rock rises beneath the Crocker Range and begins cooling into a granite pluton deep underground.
The granite fully hardens (cooling ages estimated between 7.2–7.9 million years via zircon dating).

THE SUMMIT PLATEAU
Mount KK's summit isn't a single point — glacial erosion carved the granite dome into several distinct peaks across two plateaus, with Low's Peak (4,095m) as the highest and the one all standard climbs summit. The mountain is also split by Low's Gully, a dramatic 1,800-metre-deep gorge on its north side, carved by the same glaciers that shaped the summit.
